Rome – 20 June 2016

Following a word of welcome to the delegates, the Superior General, Fr. Fogarty, introduced the speaker at this Day of Recollection – Fr. Michael Brehl CSsR, Superior General of the Redemptorists, himself an alumnus of Neil McNeil Spiritan High School, Toronto, Canada.

Having made a careful study of our Spiritan Rule of Life and the document Bagamoyo Decisions, Fr. Brehl’s first talk was on our Identity as Spiritans. He found great similarities between these and the post-Vatican II foundation-documents of his own Congregation.

He spoke about our vocation, about the essential dimensions of our consecration, about the centrality of community (while acknowledging the accompanying danger of becoming more aloof from those to whom we are sent.) In conclusion he challenged the delegates to answer specific basic questions about our Spiritan life.

His second talk was on Spiritan Leadership. He based this on the final chapter of St. John’s Gospel, where the Lord asks Peter Do you love me?  And then proceeded to tell Peter how he should strengthen his brothers for their mission and leadership role. He found leadership treated very fully and well in both SRL (48; 49 etc.) and our Bagamoyo decisions document (4.4 etc.)

Finally, Fr. Brehl was the principal concelebrant at the evening Eucharist.
