Fr. Michael Kilkenny, new General Secretary

Fr. Michael Kilkenny is an Irish Spiritan of 56 years of age. His appointment as General Secretary of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit confirms the esteem he has been held in, in this area, since the General Chapter in Torre d’Aguilha where he was secretary to the Chapter.

The rich missionary and religious experience of this specialist in canon and civil law will surely be of help to him in his new function.

Born in Galway, on 18 September, 1957, he did his primary and secondary school education there. He entered the novitiate in 1975 and completed his formation in theology and philosophy. From 1980 – 1982, he was sent to The Gambia for a religious missionary experience. Ordained to the priesthood, in 1985, he was appointed to Angola where he spent the next ten years until 1995. After a sabbatical year he worked in vocations ministry in Ireland (1996). He was then appointed to the Irish Provincial Council, from 1997 – 2001. Following this, he did specialist studies in St. Paul University, Ottawa where he gained a Degree in Canon Law – JCL. He was then appointed as secretary to the General Chapter in Torre d’Aguilha, Portugal in 2004. On return to Ireland, he studied for a degree in Civil Law in University College Dublin 2004 – 2007. Afterwards, he was appointed Community Superior in Kimmage Manor. At the time of his current appointment as General Secretary, he was on sabbatical studies. Baba Gaston.
