Fr. John Fogarty is the new Superior General of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit

  The 11th of July 2012, he was elected Superior General of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit, alias Spiritans, for the next 8 years, by the delegates of the 20th General Chapter assembled at Bagamoyo, Tanzania.

Fr. John Fogarty was born on April 9, 1952 in Ireland. He joined the Spiritans after high school senior. As a graduate in physics and mathematical physics from University College in Dublin, he served the Congregation in Ireland and Ghana, West Africa, where he taught physics in the mid 1970s. From 1978-82, he studied theology at Fribourg University in Switzerland, earning a licentiate in sacred theology. He professed his final vows as a Spiritan in 1979 and was ordained to the priesthood on September 27, 1981.

After ordination Fr. Fogarty returned to Ghana in 1982 where he worked in parish ministry. From 1986-1989 he was on Provincial Council in Ireland. In 1990-1996 he was Rector in Ejisu, Ghana and from 1994-1998 he served as Assistant Provincial in Ireland. From 1998-2004 he was in Rome serving on General Council as 1rst Assistant. From 2005 to 2010, Fr. Fogarty was the Director of the Spiritan Center at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. In 2010 he was elected by the confreres of the USA to be the Provincial Superior for the newly merged USA Eastern and Western Spiritan Provinces.
